Street art is something I always admired. During the last years, graffiti had developed in Greece from underground and almost “outlaw” activity to a mainstream kind of art, as more and more artists started involving and creating meaningful art. It’s very common that many bars or cafes hire artists to create graffiti upon payment.
My project is about documenting some of the graffiti of Athens, famous or not, combined with the everyday life. Since most graffiti are in public places, it’s interesting how they can combine and reflect gestures, feelings or any reaction of everyday people. By now, there are dozens of graffiti, but not so many can be photographed under specific conditions. I wanted every graffiti to be lighted by the sun directly, because it’s the main subject and preferably a silhouette forming in front of it. This project documents some of them and there are some more to be documented, but the project will be continued after March, since the sun’s position and height isn’t as it should be after October, to achieve the desired results.
Every graffiti in the series has some kind of connection with the figure passing in front of it and this is what I wanted to show. I didn’t want to just photograph the graffiti but try and connect them with their surroundings, to establish a bond with the people of the city.
