From early 2015 to mid 2016, a huge migrant crisis took place in Greek soil. Refugees and migrants from Syria, Iran, Afghanistan and other countries, crossed the Aegean Sea from Turkey to the Greek islands (mostly Lesvos and Chios) in rubber boats, causing many drownings. Those who made it to the shore, were heading to the mainland and after that to the Northern Greek border, in order to cross it with final destination wealthy European countries, like Germany.
In Autumn 2015, the FYROM government, closed their border, so more than 12000 at the time, were stranded near Idomeni village on the Greek side of the border. Also, in Lesvos, those who made it to the shore weren't allowed to continue to the mainland, and were stacked mostly in Moria Camp. The Camp's capacity was 2500-3000 people and at the time it was hosting over 4500 people.
